One of the highlights of the ceremony was the ceremonial first pitch thrown by Seabe Gavin Jr., whose father, Seabe Gavin Sr., played baseball for the South Bend Central High School in the 1930s and later for the Foundry Giants, the team that inspired the naming of the current field. Gavin Jr. spoke with pride about his father's legacy, describing him as "a great father, a great husband and a great family man" who never let the challenges of his time deter him from his passion for athletics. "Even though it was during a time of oppression, he never let that deter him from what he loved doing, and that was being an athlete. That was a lesson in itself," Gavin Jr. said.

The Foundry Field project goes beyond just a baseball field; it has become a living museum, celebrating the rich and diverse sporting history of South Bend. The leftfield wall of the park features a mural of Seabe Gavin Sr., as well as paintings honoring the original Foundry Giants players and the women's softball team that competed in the American Negro Girls Softball League in the 1940s.
